FAQ Frequently Asked Questions - Internet Curling Club

Subject: Synthetic curling brushes versus bristle

Question:
Two yrs ago I switched to a Synthetic brush. I am/was known for my power sweeping and my team mates have suggested that I go back to a bristle broom. Olson's (Edmonton)will soon be releasing their new Bristle broom. Is one better than the other. I have been invited to play this year on some elite leagues here and want to make the right choice.

Answer:
Thank you!

Your question is greatly appreciated and always welcomed.

This has been a long time controversy. When the brush first came out people said the corn broom was still better. When the first synthetic brush came out they said the bristle one was better.

If you brake brushing down to it's smallest factor it may help. To be an effective sweeper you need to look at the factors that make it work. Speed, pressure, friction, sweeping the running surface of stone, ice quality and temperature. If you can maximize any or all these factors you will be a very effective sweeper.

So is there a simple answer to your question...........NO. Each brush designed suites a specific purpose. When you sweep you create friction on the ice which will slightly melt the surface and create a thin layer of water that allows the stone to travel further.

So there is pros and cons to each brush. Synthetic (different types) are not as effective in warming the ice like the bristle brushes, but you won't loose a bristle. Synthetic is easier to clean after each shot. You can have hard and soft bristle for the type of ice surface you are playing one. So you can see there are many arguments for each. It is really a matter of you and your team to decide. Just remember weight all the factors in your choice.
